There are jumpers a child will wear. And then there are jumpers a child will point at across the room and refuse to take off. Luna is the second kind.
Unicorn and Rainbows is a kids intarsia jumper knitting pattern featuring Luna, a unicorn with a knitted horn and ear, a rainbow striped sleeve, and a multicolour fringe mane sewn along the underarm seam. The front motif is worked from a chart in a single contrast colour, with the horn and ear knitted separately and appliqued on for a lovely 3D finish. One sleeve is worked in rainbow stripes, the other is plain, with the fringe running along the seam to complete the mane. It is one of those patterns that gets noticed.
The pattern is rated confident beginner. The intarsia section uses only one contrast colour, which keeps it very manageable. The construction is seamed with set-in sleeves, and the instructions are written clearly throughout. The shoulder opening fastens with three buttons, which also makes it practical for getting over small heads.
