There are cardigans a child will wear. And then there are cardigans a child will refuse to take off because they are, in their own words, a dinosaur. Derek is the second kind.
If you are looking for an easy knitting pattern for a hooded cardigan, this is a great place to start. The construction is straightforward seamed stocking stitch, perfect for a beginner. Then add knitted spikes down the hood and back, a knitted tail, and a front button band, and you have the Little Dinosaur Explorer Hooded Cardigan. It looks far more impressive than it actually is to make, which is exactly how it should be.
This pattern was previously available up to size 4-5 years and has now been extended to include 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11 years, covering newborn right through to age 11 in one pattern. There are instructions for working the spikes and tail both in the round and flat on two needles, so it works whatever needles you have available.
Did I mention this is a great beginner project?
